Rep. Terry Alexander appointed to serve on EOC

Representative Terry AlexanderColumbia, SC – The Honorable Terry Alexander, a state representative serving the Florence and Darlington communities of House District 59, has been appointed to serve as the newest member of the SC Education Oversight Committee (EOC). Alexander was appointed by Speaker of the House Jay Lucas to serve as his designee to the committee. His term will begin immediately.

Alexander has been an elected official for over 26 years, beginning his career as the field director for Congressman Robin Tallon. He went on to serve on the Florence County Council for 16 years. He is a businessman, an education consultant, career development counselor, a pastor, and an adjunct professor of religion. From 1998 to 2015, Alexander assisted educators with career and occupational information, through his work with the SC Occupational Information System (SCOIS). He currently serves on the Education and Public Works Committee and the Regulations and Administrative Procedures Committee, both committees of the House of Representatives.

“On behalf of the EOC, we are most pleased to welcome the Honorable Terry Alexander to the EOC,” stated Chairman Neil Robinson. “His experience and passion for children and the communities he serves will be an attribute to the committee.” Alexander earned an Associate’s Degree from Durham Business College, his B.A. from Francis Marion University as well as a Masters of Divinity degree from Howard University.

“I am pleased to be appointed to the EOC,” stated Alexander. “I am concerned with issues of healthcare, education, and justice, and I am compassionate about using my life to serve God and humanity.”

A lifelong youth advocate, Alexander has served as the former president of the Florence County Boys and Girls Club, Habitat for Humanity, and the NAACP. He is a charter member of the Florence Breakfast Rotary Club, the Mercy Medicine Board and works with the SC Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, HIV-AIDS Task Force. He currently serves on the SC House of Representatives’ Study Committee on Opioid Abuse. Alexander is married to Ms. Starlee Davis Alexander. He has two children and two grandchildren.

The SC Education Oversight Committee is an independent, non-partisan group made up of 18 educators, business persons, and elected leaders. Created in 1998, the committee is dedicated to reporting facts, measuring change, and promoting progress within South Carolina’s education system.
